Labor can at times be very difficult to endure and can cause some women to feel panicked. The following tips are suggestions to help to help the expectant mother through the experience.During labor, keep a close eye on the expectant mother, if you see her having difficult contractions or making a noise and having restless movements – go to her and start breathing with her. This can stop a panic moment coming on.
If she does start to panic with a very painful contraction or because you have left the room and she has become overwhelmed then the following action will help:
Use the following phrases to keep her calm:
- Stay with her next to the bed
- touch her by holding her hand or her arm
- start to breathe with her so that she can follow your lead
- stay with her to help her come back to herself and if necessary call the nurse for assistance
- stay calm yourself and do not leave her
other ways that you can help include:
- it won’t be long now
- just keep going there
- picture the cervix stretching and opening
- I love you
- keep breathing just as we learnt
- It’s OK, it will be OK, it will be over soon
- offering a damp washcloth
- remind her to urinate
- offer ice chips for her to suck on
- rest when she rests
- rub her back with talc or a oil or just through her nightie or t-shirt
